They Have Left Me No Choice But To Make Fun of This

Uh...

Forget the Advice Column Christianity

As you ponder those New Year's resolutions...

Matt Johnson:
Do you see it? The answer is in Jesus, not you. He’s the man who lived the life you have not lived and died the death you should have died so that you don’t have to live for you. Hallelujah, the pressure is off!

Thanks be to God, Jesus inverts the logic of both the spiritual overachiever’s aspirations as well as the dejected defeatist’s commiserations. In Christ both are already lavished with forgiveness, blessing, election, and blamelessness. God doesn’t bank on you to make good on all that advice; Jesus already accomplished perfection. Now your life gets to be a joyful response of gratitude!

So, Christian, you have permission to forget about what Advice Column Christianity is trying to sell you. Your gut has been right all along: the stick and carrot of spiritual advice is tyranny. We’ve got really-and-truly good news. You don’t have to experience life transformation to be loved. You’re already loved in Christ.

ESPN E:60 - The Murder of Ed Thomas and The Triumph of Forgiveness

I grew up just a few miles from all this and actually played basketball against one of Ed's sons in this video.  Many of you have probably already heard about what happened a few years ago in this small town Iowa community but I had never seen this ESPN feature.  It's powerful on many different levels.

How I Use Dropbox - Sharing Files on a Team

Oftentimes it is very handy for a team of people to have access to all the same documents.  For example, our school board and elder board need to have the ability to access and change documents that are  synced in real time to all the other people on the team.  Dropbox is great for this.  There are other ways to accomplish this but Dropbox seems to be quite simple and easy to use.

Create a folder and put all the files in it that you want to share.

Once you have the files that you want to share in the folder, you simply right click (PC)/control click (Mac) on that folder and choose "Share This Folder".

That will take you to the Dropbox website where you can simply add the email addresses of the people you want to have access to that specific folder.  Once they accept they will have this folder added to their Dropbox folder and everyone will have access.

If you download and install Dropbox using this link, email me, and I'll give you a free copy of my jazz trio EP.

Just A Little Exercise Inspiration For Your 2012

Waking Up Feeling Fragile

John Piper:
There are mornings when I wake up feeling fragile. Vulnerable. It’s often vague. No single threat. No one weakness. Just an amorphous sense that something is going to go wrong and I will be responsible. It’s usually after a lot of criticism. Lots of expectations that have deadlines and that seem too big and too many.

As I look back over about 50 years of such periodic mornings, I am amazed how the Lord Jesus has preserved my life. And my ministry. The temptation to run away from the stress has never won out — not yet anyway. This is amazing. I worship him for it.

How has he done this? By desperate prayer and particular promises. I agree with Spurgeon: I love the “I wills” and the “I shalls” of God.

Instead of letting me sink into a paralysis of fear, or run to a mirage of greener grass, he has awakened a cry for help and then answered with a concrete promise.

Here’s an example.

The Tebow of The NBA?

Rick Reilly:
It takes me 16 minutes to do Eight Minute Abs.

I have a time share in Pyongyang.

I once asked the ship's captain what time the midnight brunch was.

But this is the first time my tiny brain has cost me $5,000.

Back in March, I said that BYU hoops star Jimmer Fredette wouldn't be a good NBA player. "In five years," I wrote, "he's got a really good chance to be your Provo area Isuzu dealer."

I was so sure that I said if Fredette started even one game his rookie season, I'd give five grand to his favorite charity.

Well, Fredette's a rookie now with the Sacramento Kings and he finally started a game.

His first game.

He scored 21 points on 7-for-11 shooting, with four assists. And now it looks like he has a chance to become the Tim Tebow of the NBA.

As the Light of Light Descendeth

Let all mortal flesh keep silence,
And with fear and trembling stand;
Ponder nothing earthly minded,
For with blessing in His hand,
Christ our God to earth descendeth,
Our full homage to demand.

King of kings, yet born of Mary,
As of old on earth He stood,
Lord of lords, in human vesture,
In the body and the blood;
He will give to all the faithful
His own self for heavenly food.

Rank on rank the host of heaven
Spreads its vanguard on the way,
As the Light of light descendeth
From the realms of endless day,
That the powers of hell may vanish
As the darkness clears away.

At His feet the six wingèd seraph,
Cherubim with sleepless eye,
Veil their faces to the presence,
As with ceaseless voice they cry:
Alleluia, Alleluia
Alleluia, Lord Most High!

CCMdar

Stephen & Shae Pepper:
It’s the day before the day before Christmas. Chances are you’re about to go on a road trip to see some family.

Over the last couple of years, my wife and I have done two road trips from Virginia to California and back again. Not only is this a lot of miles, it’s also a lot of music. When you’re driving this far you have to change radio stations quite often, as the one you’re listening to goes out of range.

Through all this station-changing, we’ve developed a pretty good CCMdar. What’s a CCMdar? It’s a radar located where your ear connects to the brain, that helps you tell if it’s a Christian radio station while scanning through stations. In fact, we’ve honed our CCMdar so well that it only takes 2.71 seconds for us to identify if it’s a Christian radio station.

How I Use Dropbox - Sharing Folders of Large Files

Sometimes you'll want to share a folder full of files all at once.  This is a feature that I just learned (thanks Robb) that I am finding very handy.

So let's say I wanted to share my jazz trio EP with someone.  I can't email a whole folder full of WAV files.  It's way too big.  Here is how you do it (this is for mac users, not sure how to do this on PC).

Going off of yesterday's post, create a folder in your Dropbox "Public folder" of the files that you want to share.

Then right click (PC)/control click (mac) on the folder that you want to share and choose, "Compress".

This will create a ".zip" file of all that information directly below the original folder.  Don't worry about what "zip" specifically means, other than it compresses this information in a way that allows you to easily share it.  Now that you have this ".zip" file in your Public folder of Dropbox you can simply right click (PC)/control click (mac) on that ".zip" file and "Copy Public Link" and paste that link in an email, text, IM, etc.

Questions?  Let me know.  This is one of the ways that I am going to use Dropbox quite a bit in the future.  Very handy and not bad for a free service.

**For the first five people who download and install Dropbox using this link, I will give you a free download of my jazz trio EP, Songs in a Minor Key.**

The More Staggering it Gets

“The supreme mystery with which the gospel confronts us . . . lies not in the Good Friday message of atonement, nor in the Easter message of resurrection, but in the Christmas message of incarnation. The really staggering Christian claim is that Jesus of Nazareth was God made man – that the second person of the Godhead became the ‘second man’ (1 Cor. 15:47), determining human destiny, the second representative head of the race, and that He took humanity without loss of deity, so that Jesus of Nazareth was as truly and fully divine as He was human.

Here are two mysteries for the price of one - the plurality of persons within the unity of God, and the union of Godhead and manhood in the person of Jesus. It is here, the thing that happened at the first Christmas, that the profoundest and most unfathomable depths of the Christian revelation lie. ’The Word was made flesh’ (John 1:14); God became man; the divine Son became a Jew; the Almighty appeared on earth as a helpless human baby, unable to do more than lie and stare and wriggle and make noises, needing to be fed and changed and taught to talk like any other child. And there was no illusion or deception in this: the babyhood of the Son of God was a reality. The more you think about it, the more staggering it gets.”

Great Question

How I Use Dropbox - Sharing Large Files

One of the best things about Dropbox is having the ability to share files that are too big to email.   Emailing files to people is probably one of the most common ways to share files but oftentimes those files are too big to email and the email will get rejected.  Dropbox gives you a very easy way to share those files.

For example, I like to share MP3s, WAV, or PDF files (music files) and oftentimes those files are too big to email.  So to share these files I have to drag them into my "Public folder".   So you have to click on "Open Dropbox Folder" and then place the files you want to share in your "Public" folder.

Once the files that you want to share are in your "Public" folder you can simply right click(PC)/control click (mac) on the item and select the Dropbox menu that you will see.  It's the third choice in the picture below.

Once you click on the Dropbox in the menu above you will see the following choices.  You will want to select "Copy Public Link".

Once you click on that option the link is copied to your clipboard and you can simply paste it in an email, text message, instant message, etc.  This link will allow that person to download the file that you want to share.  It's really handy.

Tomorrow I'll write about how to share huge folders full of multiple files.
